"Iranian Airways" was first established in May 1944 and commenced its first passenger flight right after the World War II from Tehran to holy city of Mashhad. Within a period of 17 years (1945-1962) this airline developed into a major domestic Route with a few international flights per week. In 1954 another private airline as "Pars Airways" was established. Initially "Pars Airways" only undertook freight services to Europe.
The geographical situation of Iran, expanding its spacious levels, relative remoteness of crowded areas from each other, lack of means of transportations either railways or roads, the need to initiate safe and fast connections to survey and governmental organizations, and the last but not the least, lack of an ordered equipment with high capacity to revive mutual aviation rights with other countries and also securing more welfare and comfort for Iranians, provided the conditions for the board of ministers to ratify a proposal suggested by road minister to establish a national Airline corporate on February 10th, 1961. Following this decision, on February 24th, 1961 both "Iranian Airways" and "Pars Airways" merged to form a new airline as" IranAir" with the acronyms and the symbol of "HOMA" bird and this new airline commenced its activities in April 1962.
Covering the domestic aviation transportation needs accompanied by observing the safety principles and forming transportation services with neighbouring and far-fetched countries, and also considering simultaneous communal contracts on commercial grounds and interests of the country were among the reasons to establish IranAir.

"هواپيمايي ايران" در ارديبهشت ماه سال ۱۳۲۳ تاسيس گرديد و اولين خدمات مسافرت هوايي خود را در مسير تهران به مشهد و پس از جنگ جهاني دوم اغاز نمود.
درطول ۱۷ سال (از سال۱۳۲۴ تا ۱۳۴۱) و به تدريج با دارا بودن تنها چند پرواز بين المللي به مهمترين خط هوايي داخلي تبديل شد. در سال ۱۳۳۳ خط هوايي خصوصي ديگري تحت عنوان " پرشين اير ويز" تا سيس گرديد. در ابتدا، خط هوايي " پرشين ا يرويز" فقط وظيفه ي حمل باربه اروپا را به عهده داشت.
وضعيت جغرافيايي کشور ايران و گسترش وسيع آن، دور بودن مراکز نسبتاً پرجمعيت از يکد يگر، کمبود وسيله ي نقليه اعم از جاده اي و ريلي، لزوم ارتباط سريع و مطمئن سازمان هاي علمي و دولتي و از همه مهمتر نبود يک شبکه منظم با قابليت هاي بالا در راستاي احياي حقوق متقابل هوايي با ساير کشورها و همچنين تامين رفاه و آسايش بيشتر ملت ايران، همه و همه شرايطي را فراهم سا خت تا هيات وزيران در تاريخ بيست و يکم بهمن سال ۱۳۴۰ ، پيشنهاد وزير راه را مبني ير تاسيس يک شرکت هواپيمايي متعلق به ملت، به تصويب برساند.
در پي اتخاذ اين تصميم شرکت هواپيمايي ملي ايران در تاريخ پنجم اسفند ماه سال ۱۳۴۰ با ادغام دو شرکت هواپيمايي "ايرانين اير ويز" و " پرشين اير ويز" وا يجاد خط هوايي جديدي بانام "هواپيمايي ملي ايران" با علامت اختصاري و سمبل " هما" تاسيس شد و از فروردين ماه سال ۱۳۴۱ فعاليت هاي خود را اغاز نمود.
آز جمله اهداف اوليه ي تاسيس "هما" ، پوشش احتياجات حمل و نقل هوايي داخل کشور همراه با رعايت بيشتر اصول ايمني پروازي و بر قراري سرويس هاي حمل و نقل هوايي با کشورهاي هم جوار و دور دست ، ضمن مراعات همزمان قرارداد هاي متقا بل مباني تجاري و مصالح کشوربود.
